Programme of the week number 3 – Derby v ‘Liverpoool’ – 1990/1991
Derby’s game at home to Liverpool on Saturday 23 March 1991 was memorable for all the wrong reasons – the Rams lost 7-1 on their way to relegation from Division 1 along with Sunderland and Luton. Dean Saunders scored the only goal for the Rams. Liverpool’s scorers were Molby, Rush, Houghton and two from Barnes and Nicol. Derby won only one league game after 1 December, a 6-2 win against Southampton at the Baseball Ground in May, Paul Williams scoring a hat-trick. Saunders and Mark Wright then signed for Liverpool at the end of the season.
The matchday programme for sale at the game has a white cover and is not difficult to obtain. Although not an official issue, there is also a print error version with a grey background to the front cover. The Derby County Programme Guide by Andy Ellis describes how the printers had produced a few proof copies before the main print run when it was noticed that ‘Liverpool’ had been spelt with an additional ‘o’. It is likely that most of the programmes were destroyed at the time but, as we know, some copies have survived.
