Although not a matchday programme, this piece of memorabilia commemorates a significant moment in the history of Derby County. To mark the club’s golden jubilee, a celebratory supper was held on Monday 1 October 1934 at the Drill Hall in Derby, located on the corner of Becket Street and Newland Street. The venue stood until its demolition in 1970; today, the site is occupied by Forester House.

The following day, the Derby Evening Telegraph published a report of the event on page 5, with a full list of attendees appearing on page 7.

During the evening, club president Mr. Bendle W. Moore gave a speech in which he paid tribute to Rams legends Steve Bloomer and Johnny Goodall, both of whom were in attendance.

“I thoroughly believe that as an inside-right we shall never see the likes of Bloomer,” Moore said. “You talk about men of today sizing up an opportunity – he did it in a flash. He’d done it before anybody had time to think what he was going to do.”

Of Goodall, who had travelled from Watford to attend, Moore quoted Sir Charles Clegg, who once described him as “the most perfect gentleman that ever stepped on to a football field.” Moore added, “He was a great player and an even greater gentleman. I never saw him guilty of an action to which anybody could take exception.”

Moore also addressed the importance of prioritising country over club when it came to international duty – a sentiment that was met with loud applause:

“I hope the time has come when every club, no matter its position, recognises that as sportsmen, when men are called upon to play for their country, it is their bounden duty to release them. Whatever our position in the League – if it’s the Scottish match, and Scotland want Duncan, and England want Cooper, Crooks, Bowers, Barker, and Keen – they can have them, even if it costs us the championship.”

Below are photos of the menu’s cover and interior. If anyone recognises the signature in the lower right corner – positioned between Jimmy Hagan and George Collin – please get in touch.
